STORYLINE:

The 2023 Russian Dragon Boat Championships concluded in Moscow on Thursday. About 20 teams from all over Russia, including men's, women's and mixed ones, competed in the categories of 200m, 500m and 2,000m during the four-day event.

Anton Lychagin, captain of the "Rodnik" dragon boat team, said that he came into contact with dragon boat sports in 2004 and formed his own team. In recent years, his team has won many European and world championships. Excellent results were also achieved in this year's event. He said that he and his teammates have been paying attention to the performance of Chinese dragon boat athletes and observing their techniques and tactics.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Russian): ANTON LYCHAGIN, Captain of "Rodnik" dragon boat team
"The Chinese athletes row at a pace different from us. We are trying to do more power rowing technically. We tried several times to use the techniques of the Chinese rowers. We haven't yet succeeded. We are always ready to perform and come to our Chinese friends in China."

Vitaly Balychev, Master of Sports of Russia of international class in kayaking and canoeing, said that Russian athletes' participation in dragon boat sports began at the end of the last century, when they were invited to China to participate in the dragon boat competition in 1998. A few years later, Russia also created its own dragon boat championship, which has now a history of more than 20 years.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Russian): VITALY BALYCHEV, Master of Sports of Russia of international class in kayaking and canoeing
"It's just fascinating. The Chinese invented a good discipline. China lives in us."

Besides the championships, there are also dragon boat tournaments in Russia every year for amateur rowers to participate from all over the country.
