STORYLINE:

Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of Arabica coffee.

Coffee exporters in the country are enjoying the rising coffee market in China as an increasing number of Chinese consumers tend to value Ethiopian coffee.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ABDULLAH BAGERSH, General manager of S.A. Bagersh Private Limited Company (PLC)
"The general population of China begins to appreciate coffee. So the moment they appreciated and tasted Ethiopian coffee, and found out that it has a very different taste from other countries' coffee, when they saw that, they  started to really be interested and aggressive about importing Ethiopian coffee of all types into China."

According to data from the International Coffee Organization, China's annual coffee consumption has expanded by an average rate of more than 15 percent over the past decade, while the international growth rate of coffee consumption stands at 2.2 percent.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): AHADU  WOUBSHET, Managing director of Moyee Coffee Roasting PLC
"The Chinese coffee culture is actually growing. Obviously, it's a big rising market. It is a very big population as well. So if the culture comes, and I am sure, China would give a lot of opportunity, a massive opportunity for Ethiopia."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): GIZAT WORKU, Chief executive officer of the Ethiopian Coffee Association
"China is a new emerging market. Any businessman cannot ignore China. Not only (not) ignore, it has to put No. 1 in any business relation with China. So the Chinese market for Ethiopian coffee is potentially rich."

The Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority recently announced that the East African nation earned 1.1 billion U.S. dollars between June 2022 and April 2023 and China became the seventh-largest importer of Ethiopian coffee during the period.
