STORYLINE:
Heavy rains lashed the Indian capital of New Delhi on Sunday, breaking a 41-year record for rainfall in a single day.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded a rainfall of 153 mm within 24 hours, ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. This marked the highest rainfall ever recorded in the month of July since 1982, shattering the previous 41-year record.
The heavy downpour caused waterlogging in several areas of the city, making it difficult for vehicles to move and impacting the public transportation system. The city's infrastructure, including the drainage systems designed to handle rainfall, faced a significant challenge as they struggled to cope with the large volume of water.
The heavy rain is the result of a western disturbance, which is a weather system that brings rain to the Indian subcontinent. The western disturbance is expected to continue to bring rain to the region for the next few days.
In response to the situation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has canceled official leaves for all government employees on Sunday. The CM has also instructed all officers to be on the ground and monitor the situation closely.
Indiscriminate rain also affected normal life in many states, including the northern hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Bridges broke in some parts of India due to gushing waters; in other places roads were washed away in flooding waters.
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in the Indian hilly state of Himachal Pradesh, issuing the highest level red alert.
