A chubby monitor lizard waited for cars to pass before crossing a busy road.

Footage shows the smart Godzilla-like creature waiting on the other side of the street in Samut Prakan province, Thailand on May 26.

The 5ft-long reptile slowly crawled along the pedestrian lane after letting trucks and motorcycles through.

But while on its way, a van and a taxi had to slow down and stop to avoid hitting the massive creature.

Onlooker Suraswadee Sukkasem, who saw the animal from a nearby shop, said: ‘The lizard was chubby and crawled very slowly but moved very safely. It knew how to wait for the cars and cross.'

The monitor lizard then jumped down a hole leading to the sewers that it found in the shop.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
