Heatwave 'Cleon' scorches cities in Greece as country takes emergency measures for the extreme temperatures
Heatwave Cleon scorches cities in Greece as the country takes emergency measures for the prolonged heat. Greece announced a series of measures on Tuesday, including telework options and a possible change of archaeological site visitor hours ahead of a weeklong heatwave expected to send temperatures this week into the 40s (Celsius).
The action plan was decided during an emergency meeting earlier today between the climate crisis, labor and culture ministries.
Footage shows the city of Thessaloniki "baking" during the heatwave with the thermometer climbed to 41 degrees Celsius. Locals as well as tourists are looking for shade under trees while almost everyone carries bottles of water to cool off.
"I don't feel ok with the heat, I actually feel like I'm dying," says Eliza, a tourist from the US (03:47 timestamp)
"It is quite a shock these high temperatures" says Bogdan a tourist from Serbia (03:56 timestamp)
“Heatwave Cleon” is set to hit the country for days to come, with temperatures in many parts of Greece expected to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) on Friday and Saturday.
Among others, Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni decided the possibility of closing down certain archeological sites if deemed necessary during peak heat as well as adding shaded areas around the Acropolis and distributing free water to visitors. She also called for increased patrols due to heightened fire probability at and around archeological sites.
Additionally, residents and visitors are advised to avoid unnecessary movement and exposure, eat light meals, drink water regularly and take showers.
