This is the terrifying moment a freak whirlwind roared towards a shop sending residents fleeing in northeast Thailand.

The locals were tidying up the front of their store in Khon Kaen province on July 9 when they spotted the fierce twister approaching on July 9.

CCTV footage shows the residents pointing at the coming whirlwind and running inside just moments before the gales battered the shop. Pieces of iron roof and debris were blown down following the phenomenon.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
