Heavy floods submerged roads following a 'catastrophic' storm in Vermont, USA.

Drone footage shows the deluge caused by the slow-moving storm covering vast fields in the town of Waterbury on July 11.

The storm had dumped around two months' worth of rain over two days in the region, prompting evacuations as dozens of roads were closed across the northeastern state.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott said the flood waters were 'historic', wreaking devastation comparable to Tropical Storm Irene that killed six in the state back in 2011.

He said: 'Make no mistake, the flooding we have seen is historic and catastrophic, surpassing levels seen during Tropical Storm Irene.

'I know thousands of Vermonters have lost homes, businesses and more. The devastation is far-reaching.'

As of Tuesday, July 11, state officials said the water has begun receding as the swollen Winooski River in the state capital Montpelier stabilised and is now 'below flood stage.'

There have been no injuries or deaths reported in the state as of Tuesday, authorities said.
