STORYLINE:

Türkiye's current account registered a deficit of 7.93 billion U.S. dollars in May, according to the figures released by the Turkish central bank on Tuesday, higher than expected.

Economists participating in the semi-official Anadolu Agency's expectation survey expected the current account in May to have a deficit of 7.03 billion dollars.

The country's current account deficit was 5.4 billion dollars in April, while the deficit in the first five months of 2023 stands at 37.7 billion dollars, official data showed.

Türkiye's deficit in 2022 was about 48.7 billion dollars. To narrow the growing current account deficit, the Turkish government has recently raised taxes on services and goods as well as bank consumer loans.
