A monkey repeatedly stole from a supermarket three times within a mere four hours in southwest China.

CCTV footage filmed in the city of Guiyang in Guizhou Province on July 10, shows a primate initially loitered around the supermarket entrance before swiftly seizing goods from a basket near the door and making a swift getaway.

An hour later, the daring monkey returned to the crime scene. This time, however, it did not immediately swipe goods. Instead, it tentatively entered and exited the supermarket, waiting at the entrance for a moment, then surveying its surroundings, before carefully parting the door curtain to once again make off with pilfered goods.

A few hours later, the monkey was back at it for the third time. This time, it seemed to selectively choose its stolen goods. In each instance, it was only after the monkey made off with the items that the supermarket staff realised what had occurred. Expressing frustration, the staff could only stand by helplessly as the crimes unfolded.

According to the supermarket owner, Mr Xu, the light-fingered thief is a macaque from Qianling Mountain, a species under second-class state protection.

Since the store is located near Qianling Mountain, it is often visited by these wild monkeys. "It was not the first time that such an incident has occurred. Every year when the weather gets warmer, the monkeys would come," said Xu. He added that the monkeys are very smart. "They choose snacks based on taste and if driven away, they would definitely come back until they get what they want."

Despite the frequent monkey shoplifting incidents, the snacks stolen by the monkeys aren't particularly valuable. Confronted with such circumstances, the staff maintain their distance while trying to drive the monkeys away to avoid any injury.
