Zookeepers celebrated the successful hatching of a Caribbean flamingo at a zoo in Thailand.

Footage shows the gray-feathered fledgling grooming itself under a larger flamingo towering over it at the Khon Kaen Zoo.

Zoo Director Narongwit Chodchoy said that the egg was laid last June 11 and hatched a month later on July 11.

He said: 'Khon Kaen Zoo currently has nine male and nine female Caribbean flamingos. Visitors are welcome to see the flamingos as long as they follow the zoo's rules and listen to the staff.'

Caribbean flamingos have dark pink or red-orange feathers, typically darker than other flamingo species.

Newborn Caribbean flamingos have grey feathers, and gradually gain the pink blush to their plumage as they mature.

Caribbean flamingos inhabit both freshwater and saltwater habitats and eat a diet of seaweed, diatoms, and invertebrates such as crustaceans and shrimp.

The average lifespan of a Caribbean flamingo is 40 to 50 years, and they commonly weigh between 2.2 and 4.8 kilograms.

Caribbean flamingos are known to lay just one egg at a time, and both the male and female parents take turns incubating the egg for 27 to 31 days.
