Record-breaking water levels in the Yamuna River have forced authorities to evacuate thousands after days of unrelenting rainfall in Delhi. On July 12, the river breached the danger mark, exacerbating the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and prompting unprecedented disaster response measures.

The river's surge began on Monday, prompting authorities to begin the relocation of those residing on the floodplains as the water level reached 206 metres. As the river's waters inundated city streets, homes and marketplaces, traffic and rail services were suspended at Old Railway Bridge, straining the city's infrastructure and transport systems.

The water level has since crossed the perilous 207.5-meter mark, signaling a heightened risk for flood-like conditions in the surrounding areas. In response, Delhi Traffic Police have issued special advisories, warning residents of potential road hazards and alternate routes.

The situation is predicted to worsen as the Central Water Commission warns that water levels may continue to rise. Compounding the crisis, the India Meteorological Department forecasts persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand over the next two days, potentially exacerbating the flooding risk. As the city braces for more rainfall, the focus remains on relocating those in vulnerable regions and maintaining flood control measures.
