Broken mall escalator sparks concern weeks following horror travelator amputation at Bangkok airport
A broken shopping mall escalator sparked concern weeks after a horror travelator accident that amputated a woman's leg at an airport in Bangkok.
Shoppers at the Mega Bang Na shopping centre in Bangkok were alarmed when they saw the second-storey escalator with one of its plates sticking out near the platform on July 11.
A male customer was riding the escalator when it malfunctioned, local media reported.
In a statement, Mega Bangna management said that an object fell on the escalator, triggering its security switch and stopping its movement in line with safety standards.
The mall said there were no injuries, but shoppers may have been shocked by the sudden noise from the falling object, which was not identified.
The statement continued: 'At this time, we have coordinated with responsible companies to investigate, find the cause, and take urgent corrective action. The escalator has been temporarily disabled for further detailed inspection.
'The Department Store always recognizes and considers the safety of all customers as the top priority. The equipment is regularly inspected and maintained by specialist companies.
'The shopping center welcomes all comments and appreciates useful suggestions in order to improve the service in the future.'
The accident comes just weeks after a woman, 57, lost her leg in a freak accident at the Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok.
The passenger was travelling on a domestic flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province, when the surface of the walkway collapsed and her limb was sucked into the machinery below.
Medics had to amputate her leg at the scene to free her.
