A graduation ceremony was flooded from heavy rain caused by a low-pressure area of weather in the Philippines.

The court of the Gadgaran Integrated School in Calbayog City, Samar province, was covered in around a foot of water following a monsoon storm on July 12.

Footage shows school staff tidying up tables and monobloc chairs at the venue as they awaited for the flood to recede.

Jeffrey Porlares, a teacher at the school, said the ceremony was pushed back for several hours due to the deluge.

State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the heavy rain was caused by a low pressure area amplified by the southwest monsoon.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
