This amazing drone footage captured a mother whale and her calf swimming side by side near Reunion Island on July 10.

Newsflare member Jonathan Payet managed to capture close-up visuals of the scene using a stabilized drone with a 12x zoom.

The video shows the mother gracefully swimming along while her calf playfully thrashes around in close proximity.

Payet said: "With a lot of chance I saw them after five minutes of waiting. There was stable and always on the surface. Generally every year they are crossing and most of the time they dive for five minutes before breathing once again. So I think I was lucky to see this scene. It’s the first time I've seen them so relaxed.

"This scene shows us that animals also have great relationships, maybe sometimes more than humans. Sharing these pictures will show the world how beautiful our planet is. We have a biodiversity and drones allow us to see hidden scenery.

"Every year at this period the whales are coming back to Reunion Island where they are born. They are in the infinity big ocean but they know where they are born."
