Residents found an adult tapir trapped in an irrigation canal in Indonesia's Nagari Amping Parak Timur today (July 17). According to reports from the area, the animal got stuck there at approximately 6.30 WIB.

Banta Fauzan, a resident, said: "When locals found the protected animal, it was injured and helpless. It was previously found in a ditch in a weak condition", he said.

According to the man, this is the first time a tapir was spotted in the area. These animals usually live in forests or along river banks.

The Tapir is classified as an endangered and protected species in Indonesia, particularly on the island of Sumatra.

Residents of Nagari Amping Parak Timur, Sutera District, Pesisir Selatan (Pessel) Regency, found an adult Tapir entering the local Taratak Panas Pond. Information received in the field, this rare animal mired into the irrigation canal at around 06.30 WIB.

Local resident Banta Fauzan said that the tapir was now still in the process of being evacuated by local residents whose condition looked limp and injured.

"When residents found the protected animal, it was injured and helpless. Previously this tapir was found in a ditch in a weak condition," he told journalists, Monday (17/7/2023).

He explained that until now the Tapir was still being evacuated by local residents with makeshift equipment.

However, he hopes that related parties will help, because this is the first time residents have found tapirs in the area.

After a long time local residents evacuated, finally these protected animals were able to be released and returned to the wild.

To note, Tapir is a herbivorous animal that eats young leaves along the forest or river banks.

Tapir has a body shape like a pig, ears like a rhinoceros and a long muzzle like an anteater. While the groans are more like the sounds of birds than other mammals.
