This is the heartwarming moment rescue volunteers rescued a swan and a pigeon drowning in the River Thames.

RNLI staff were out on exercise when they spotted the hapless bird floating in the water and being pestered by gulls in Gravesend, Kent, on July 15.

Footage shows the lifeboat crew approaching the waterlogged pigeon on their boat and lifting it out of the river. They then left it on a nearby ship to dry off.

Gravesend lifeboat crew member John Robinson, who took part in the rescue, said: 'The RNLI cannot be pigeon-holed as a charity which only saves human lives. We do our best to save all lives at sea and on the River Thames, whether that is a human or animal life.'
