A 5-month-old baby boy narrowly escaped being swept away by the merciless gusts brought by typhoon Talim while playing on a carpet at home in southern China.

CCTV footage filmed in Maoming City in Guangdong Province on July 17 shows a boy laying on a carpet nearly being whisked off the ground as the storm wreaked havoc around him.

Mr Dong, the father of the child explained that the tempest had blown open a window in their house, which led to the alarming scenario.

Maoming Meteorological Bureau elevated the typhoon warning from orange (the second strongest level) to red (the strongest level), indicating an impending severe weather event with wind speeds potentially reaching above 117m/h.
