The Tiete river, located not far from Sao Paulo, Latin America's biggest city, plays a vital role in providing potable water, irrigation, and energy production for southeast Brazil, the country's most populated region.
The river's surface is now covered in a noxious white foam, resembling fresh snow but emanating an unpleasant odor due to its toxic nature.
This video illustrates the arrival of polluted waters from the Cabucu de Cima river into the Tiete river, near the border of Guarulhos and Sao Paulo, Brazil on the 18th of July.
