Female rowers break Around Britain World Record, UK
Team Ithaca all-female rowing team have broken an Around Britain World Record today (July 19) - after finishing their circumnavigation (as part of GB Row Challenge) at Tower Bridge, London this morning.
They are the fastest female team & first team of six to row continuously and unsupported around the coast of Britain (over 2000 miles) within 50 days or less - completing the challenge in just 44 days.
This feat is all the more incredible given the fact that after they set off on June 4 (and only one day into the challenge) they were plagued by setbacks - after they spent nearly a whole week trying to get the 10-miles past the Isle of Sheppey at the mouth of the Thames.
Footage shows the rowers battling the strong wind & tides off the island's north coast on June 5 (at points making no progress); finally reaching the Red Sands Forts by evening (a distance of 10 miles), only to backtrack the 10 miles they'd just completed - back to the safety of Queenborough Harbour - due to the strong wind & tides.
They then spent over a day stuck at Queenborough, before moving to Harty Ferry on June 7, where they stayed until late evening June 8 due to strong north-easterly winds.
Footage ends with them passing Southend-on-sea pier yesterday (July 18) as they returned to the River Thames and the homestretch.
