Police convince nuns to evacuate convent amidst raging fires in Greece
Greek police officers were captured on video making desperate efforts to persuade nuns to evacuate a hilltop convent in Mandra, Greece, as wildfires spread across various regions.
The heart-wrenching footage shows a police officer wearing a face mask on his knees, pleading with one of the nuns to leave the convent as the fiery inferno draws near.
The incident took place in Mandra, West Attica, close to Athens, where locals had already evacuated, but the nuns remained reluctant to leave. After persistent persuasion, the officer successfully convinced 35 nuns to evacuate the building.
The wildfires are part of a larger "heat dome" situation affecting Europe, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in countries like Greece, eastern Spain, and southern Italy. Greece sought assistance from other European nations to combat the uncontrolled fires in multiple regions.
