The U.S. army conducted search and rescue operations in flood-stricken Vermont in the US.

Soldiers, accompanied by the Garrison Support Command and the Vermont National Guard, battled through the deluge in Berlin Town to provide disaster relief and search for survivors on July 11.

A Vermont National Guard UH-72 Lakota Helicopter was also dispatched to survey the flood damage and find stranded locals that needed rescue.

A storm had dumped around two months worth of rain over two days in Vermont this month, with some communities seeing seven to nine inches of water, local media reported.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott said the flood waters were 'historic', wreaking devastation comparable to Tropical Storm Irene that killed six in the state back in 2011.

A 63-year-old resident of Barre City drowned in the flood, officials said on July 12.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a press conference on Monday, July 17, that officials are looking into building extreme weather-resilient infrastructure in the future.

He said: 'We can't go into the future requiring communities to put everything exactly the way it was if a '100-year flood' is going to be an annual event.'

The Vermont government is now requesting federal relief funds to aid the affected communities.
