American-Jewish businessman Paul Kaufmann donated 10 skull fragments, presumed to be from Ludwig van Beethoven, to the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, on July 20, 2023.

He inherited the fragments from his great-uncle, Franz Romeo Seligmann, who acquired them when Beethoven's bones were reburied in Vienna in 1863.

Kaufmann expressed his pleasure that the fragments were finally returned to Vienna for research purposes. The fragments include two significant pieces from the back of the head and the right side of the forehead. Researchers hope to uncover information about Beethoven's illnesses and the cause of his death using the fragments.

Forensic pathologist Christian Reiter and University of Vienna rector Markus Mueller expressed gratitude for the donation and emphasized the responsibility of preserving and researching these historical artifacts at the Josephinum Museum.
