Protesters set alight an effigy of Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ahead of his second state address today, July 24.

Student activists and labour groups burned a sculpture of the controversial leader - branded 'Big Bootlicker Marcos' - as they slammed several of his policies along a major thoroughfare in Quezon City, Manila on July 24 morning.

Transport groups joining the protest also staged a noise barrage, honking their horns as they passed Commonwealth Avenue.

Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr., also known as 'Bongbong', will be giving his second State of the Nation Address - an annual report on the country's affairs and future plans - later this afternoon.

Bongbong is the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose brutal 14-year reign saw at least 3,240 killed, 34,000 tortured, and 70,000 jailed, Amnesty International said.

His mother, Imelda, who is notorious for her massive shoe collection, was convicted in 2018 on seven counts of graft, but has evaded prison 'due to her old age'.

The Marcos family is believed to have amassed a staggering five to 10 billion USD in cash they plundered the national coffers, plunging the Philippines into debt and years of poverty. The Philippine Commission on Good Governance was established to recover the Marcoses' ill-gotten wealth after they fled the country in disgrace in 1986.
