Locals rushed to reinforce a sea wall being battered by giant waves amid torrential weather caused by Typhoon Doksuri in the Philippines.

Residents shored up the damaged coastal structure with piles of sandbags as they hunkered down for the typhoon in Mamburao Town, Occidental Mindoro province on July 23.

Village chairman Jimmy Patal said a section of the 60-metre wall had collapsed due to previous storms, and the locals were now worried their homes would be flooded with Typhoon Doksuri approaching.

He said: 'It's possible the dike will completely collapsed and the water will enter homes in the village, potentially causing destruction.

'We have already requested funds of around 25 million PHP (457,615 USD) from the national government to repair it, though the money might come in August.'

Typhoon Doksuri, known in the Philippines as Egay, intensified into a typhoon on Sunday, July 23, and brought scattered rainstorms while enhancing the southwest monsoon, Philippine weather agency PAGASA said.

Forecasters warned Doksuri could further strengthen into a supertyphoon on Tuesday while approaching Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China.
