Hundreds of University of Cape Town (UCT) students protested outside the Sarah Baartman Hall to oppose the presence of Professor Patrick Lumumba at the tenth anniversary celebrations of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at the university on Monday (July 24).

The EFF is having a number of events around the country to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The EFF became South Africa’s third largest political party after first contesting elections in 2014.

Patrick Lumumba is a director of the Kenya School of Law. Lumumba was invited to by the EFF to deliver a public lecture at the UCT campus. Lumumba has gained notoriety for supporting anti-gay laws in Uganda and for statements claiming gay people can be “cured”.

The protest was largely peaceful as the LGBTQI protesters were not allowed access to the hall. Lumumba was welcomed by senior leadership and escorted into the hall by EFF leader Julius Malema.
