Maxim Kontsevich, a Russian and French mathematician and mathematical physicist, said he expected Chinese mathematicians to win the Fields Medal soon.
 
Kontsevich told Xinhua at the ongoing International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) held in Beijing from July 16 to July 28.
 
The Fields Medal is the "Nobel Prize" in mathematics. So far no one in China has won it. Kontsevich, a Fields Medalist himself, said that Chinese mathematicians have already shown their prominence in the world and will definitely win the Fields Medal in time.

"This Congress really shared between three subjects, mathematics, physics and information technology, which are close and related. I'm eager to attend talks, not only in mathematics, but in other subjects.
Mathematics is a very beautiful subject. And it can explain some elementary things. People will get attracted by the beauty, I think. I'm pretty sure that in China, you have some popular journals for young kids to explain some mathematics, some kind of problems, which are appropriate for their age levels.
Definitely the time will come. I'm sure that pretty soon we will (see) Chinese Fields Medalist. Definitely, I'm expecting maybe next Congress, or maybe in one of the next, (because) there are really several breakthroughs recently in very serious areas."
