An extraordinary torrential downpour battered southern China, resulting in the highest rainfall recorded since meteorological records began in 1957.

Video filmed in Gulin County in Sichuan Province on July 27, shows deep floodwater submerging roads and washing away vehicles.

The station recorded a staggering 201 millimetres of rainfall, significantly surpassing the previous historical extreme of 163.7 millimetres. The intense downpour led to the destruction of several roads, washed away vehicles, and caused serious waterlogging.

Emergency response teams were rapidly mobilised, and so far 1,902 households, accounting for 6,473 people, have been urgently evacuated to safety. As of the time of writing, there have thankfully been no reports of casualties.

The downpour has also wreaked havoc on the county's infrastructure, causing damage to homes, roads, bridges, rivers, and crops. The full extent of the damage is currently being assessed and a comprehensive report is expected soon.
