On July 19, 2023, soldiers from the United States Army Air Ambulance Detachment- Yakima (USAAAD), 2-158th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, carried out an aeromedical evacuation of an injured civilian in Klickitat County, Washington, United States.

The mission was initiated when the Klickitat County sheriff's Office received an alert from an injured paraglider. As ground rescue was deemed impossible due to the challenging terrain, federal support was requested from the Washington State Emergency Operations Centre.

Responding to the call, soldiers from the Yakima Training Centre boarded a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter equipped with hoist capability. They located the patient on a 30-degree slope and, with excellent visibility and calm winds, deployed a flight medic to the scene via hoist.

After assessing the patient's condition, flight medics prepared her for transport. Due to the severity of the injuries to the head, ribs, and leg, ground evacuation was not feasible. The patient was efficiently hoisted and then transported to MultiCare Memorial Hospital in Yakima.

The successful execution of this mission is credited to the dedication and skill of the air ambulance crews and flight operations personnel who regularly train for such critical operations. The entire mission, from departure to return, took less than two and a half hours. The USAAAD commander expressed immense pride in leading such a capable organization.
