Astonished police looked on as dozens of escaped goats took over a street in California.

The farm animals had broken free from their enclosure to roam and graze around residents' houses in Shea Drive, Pinole City, on July 24.

Pinole police officers responding to the incident were at a loss on how to shepherd the creatures, with one of them heard saying: 'There's nothing we can do until the herder gets here.'

The goats were later contained and returned to their enclosure, the Pinole Police Department said.

The incident happened on the same day the Bay Area Rapid Transit announced that a flock of sheep will be replacing its fire mitigation goats.
