Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Thursday submitted a list of 28 nominees to the Senate for approval as ministers in his cabinet.

The country's constitution stipulates that the president should make ministerial nominations within 60 days after he was sworn in.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the receipt of Tinubu's list of nominees and read it during a plenary on Thursday.

According to Akpabio, the list also contained the nomination of opposition members in line with the president's promise of "a government of national unity and competence".

Tinubu told the senate that additional nominations would be sent in due course.

The Nigerian leader urged the upper legislative arm of the government to give "expeditious consideration" to the list of nominees.

Under Nigerian laws, the Senate is expected to screen the president's nominees before confirming them fit for cabinet appointments.
