This is the nail-biting moment a truck swerved just in time to avoid a bus turning at an intersection in Thailand.

The bus was making a U-turn at the junction on Luang Phaeng Road in Bangkok on June 5, but the driver failed to switch on his signal light.

Traffic camera footage shows the bus crossing the intersection as the oncoming truck carrying soil sounded its horn while moving forward.

The quick-thinking truck driver managed to steer the large vehicle enough to avoid a direct hit, only grazing the bus's side mirror instead.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
