After six long years, the streets of Prayagraj, UP will once again come alive with Moharram's grandest procession. The long-awaited event, suppressed for three years in a show of respect to Hindu festivals and stifled later by the iron grip of COVID-19, is finally set to be revived.

In an extraordinary demonstration of community respect, the procession had been voluntarily halted by the Muslim community for three years, due to coinciding Hindu festivals.

Following that, the shadow of the pandemic fell across the globe, banning all gatherings and processions, including this ancient and revered tradition.

But this year, the wait is over. The government, in a bold and considerate move, has given the green light to the procession, albeit with one major caveat. While they've scrapped all activities in the procession that could result in self-harm, a show of fervent religious expression in certain rituals, they have not shied away from allowing the festivities to go ahead.

Any form of self-injury, once a prominent aspect of this poignant ritual, will be strictly prohibited.
