Planes passed through the thick black smoke that was clouding a flight path above burning homes.

Footage shows the first jet, operated by low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific Airline, flying through the dark build-up on the approach to the landing strip in Manila, the Philippines, on July 8.

A second plane from China Airlines, as identified by the red plum blossom flower logo on the livery, then also had to pass through the smoke as it landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Onlooker Lady Jean Escudero said: ‘The smoke was black and thick, but the planes did not back away.'

The residential area fire razed 150 homes and injured five people before it was declared under control shortly before 6 pm local time.
