Large Turtle Undergoes Training Sessions To Face Real-Life Sea Conditions In Almunecar, Granada, Spain
This footage was filmed and produced 24 July 2023.
This is the moment a female loggerhead sea turtle named Frankie undergoes training to prepare her for release back into the sea after spending many years in captivity.
Frankie had been living in a public aquarium in Almunecar, Spain, but was deemed too big for the enclosure and needed to return to her natural habitat.
At the facilities of the organization Equalia, Frankie is receiving special training sessions, including swimming, self-defense, and fishing, to adapt to real-life sea conditions. Weighing over 100 kilograms and measuring 1.2 meters long, Frankie has one month to improve her physical condition and get used to water currents.
The training also includes self-defense techniques, simulating predator attacks. Her diet is being adjusted to include prawns, crustaceans, and jellyfish to prepare her for finding food in the wild. Frankie's past life in the sea is uncertain, as her background is unknown, adding complexity to the training process.
Once released, she will be monitored using a GPS attached to her back to track her movements and progress.
