Terrifying moment freediver's line gets tangled up in ditched fishing gear
A freediver has left social media users in shock sharing footage of the moment a fishing hook got caught in her dive line.
With ‘The Deepest Breath’ documentary trending on Netflix, it has brought this extreme sport to the forefront.
It’s a passion that Glendale Bontes shares, with the freediver sharing clips of her adventures on TikTok (@dalieissues ).
But it can also be a dangerous activity, as is made evident in the 30-year-old’s video, which has over two million views.
“The first words that came to my mind was ‘Oh my god, what should I do,” Glendale, a project management analyst, from Cebu, Philippines, said.
“I wanted to ask my dive buddy for help, but I saw that she was far from me.
“I knew my breath wasn't going to hold much longer and, on impulse, unhooked myself from the dive line.
“Thankfully it removed smoothly, I can't imagine what could have happened to me if it didn't come off.”
The incident took place at the end of June this year, with Glendale later sharing the footage on social media.
In the clip, she can be seen swimming up her dive line, before stopping and coming across the tangled net.
She then points to her dive buddy to flag what has happened, before carefully removing herself from the dive line.
Thankfully, she is then able to rise to the surface.
But things could have ended very differently.
Glendale has been freediving since 2020 but makes a point to tell her fans to be careful.
She said: “I uploaded the video to show that certain scenarios like this could happen and that presence of mind is vital in this sport.
“Don't panic and everything will be okay.
“Many of my freediver friends preach me for this.
“Make sure to dive with a confident diver that you could trust, invest first on freediving skills and courses rather than going straight in.”
For Glendale, freediving is her way of de-stressing and escaping from reality.
She added: “I am at peace when I freedive.
“I enjoy the scenery of the deep blue ocean, especially when I go deeper, the cold water is just addicting and relaxing.
“Plus it is a bonus if I encounter a wild creature such as a shark or sea turtles.
“Also the contractions in holding my breath, I enjoy it, the squeezing of my lungs every time I hold my breath at its full potential is like entering a new dimension and just feeling the moment of peace.”
The clip has over 34,600 likes and hundreds of comments from shocked users.
Dustin commented: “Why are they fishing when they know somebody is down there diving.” [sic]
To which Glendale replies: “It's a fishing line that's been left and washed off by strong current and got tangled in our dive line.”
Joe said: “I would drown, how do you remain calm.”
Someone else wrote: “Presence of mind is very important here.”
Another fan said: “I held my breath while watching.”
“I got hooked in my wetsuit leg by fishing gear while scuba diving, my husband had to unhook me,” commented Becky.
“I would’ve died at that exact moment,” wrote Abby.
“Don’t worry my panic, panicked for you watching this,” said Julie.
“Allllllll of that open ocean, still finds the dive line,” added Seth. [sic]
“That’s what happens when u don’t panic!!,” wrote someone else.
