Two migrants have been found dead in floating barbed-wired buoys installed by Texas officials in July to halt illegal crossings over the Rio Grande from Mexico.

The migrants, whose names and nationalities have not been made public, are believed to have drowned. It is unclear whether the deaths are connected, report local media.

The Mexican ministry said: “We are concerned about the impact on migrants’ human rights and personal security that these state policies could have, as they go in the opposite direction to close collaboration.”

The huge river barrier was installed in July in a bid a halt illegal immigration into the US from Mexico. Reinforced with barbed wire and with netting underneath, it is designed to be impossible to cross.

Public Safety Department officials in Texas notified the Consulate General of Mexico‎ in Eagle Pass, USA, of the first body's discovery.
Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Affairs reported the grim find on 2nd August. The second death was reported by Mexico's National Institute of Migration hours later, it emerged.

The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs said in a statement obtained on 2nd August: "The Secretariat of Foreign Affairs reports that authorities from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) notified the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass that around 14:35 hours, they found the body of a deceased person trapped in the southern part of the buoys placed in the Rio Grande. Beta Group personnel are already leading the rescue efforts for the body. At this moment, the cause of death and the nationality of the person are unknown. We reiterate the position of the Mexican Government that the placement of wired buoys by Texas authorities is a violation of our sovereignty".

Spokesperson Lt Chris Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety had earlier claimed that the barrier would "deter unlawful crossings and human smuggling, and prevent the loss of life due to drownings".
