Diners fled when an out-of-control pick-up truck ploughed into a barbecue restaurant in Thailand.

The customers were tucking into their dinner at the roadside eatery in Krabi province when the vehicle veered off the road into the dining area at around 9:21 on July 30.

Shocking CCTV footage shows how the truck swerved and crashed into chairs and tables, sending the locals into a panic.

One woman miraculously survived as the vehicle missed her by a few feet.

Local media reported that the truck's 35-year-old driver was travelling with his 11-year-old son from Phatthalung when they crashed into three cars and a motorcycle. The impact sent their truck spinning towards the restaurant.

An electricity post and a bamboo hut were damaged from the crash, authorities said.

Residents pulled the father and son alive from their truck and rushed them to a nearby hospital. The youngster claimed his dad may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Police said they were investigating the cause of the accident and assessing the damages for compensation.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
