An American pensioner was arrested today over the alleged abuse of an eight-year-old girl in northern Thailand.

Jerry Wayne Haynie from Dallas, North Carolina, was detained by cops in Phayao province on August 4 following complaints made by relatives of the child on July 29.

Cops presented the arrest warrant to the retired salesman, who is understood to have been on holiday at the time, and arrested him on suspicion of 'committing an indecent act on a child under 13 years of age'.

The American denied the charges. After being informed of his charge and rights, he was held in custody for further legal action. Cops are currently interviewing him and others involved in the case.

Police Colonel Bowon Chaiyakha, Superintendent of the Muang Phayao district Police Station, said: 'The arrest was made following a complaint by relatives of the alleged victim. They said that the suspect had committed an indecent act against the child.

'After gathering the necessary evidence, an arrest warrant was requested from Phayao Provincial Court, which was issued on August 4.

'The police summoned Haynie to the station for questioning, and he agreed to appear at the station. Officers are now investigating the case.'
