Figures released by Israel's Ministry of Environmental Protection showed that the Dead Sea had been shrinking at an alarming pace, with its water level dropping by 1.2 meters each year.
 
As the water receded, a barren landscape of salt rock and numerous sinkholes appeared.
 
Israeli media reported that over 8,000 sinkholes have formed in the Dead Sea area over the past 40 years, and the number is expected to double in the next few years.
