Motorcycle riders fell into a dangerous pit separating two lanes at a highway in Thailand.

CCTV footage shows a motorist and his two-wheeler plunging straight into the ditch without any safety barriers in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on August 2.

He slid down and crashed with his vehicle but quickly sprung up and sat on the edge of the road, disoriented and looking around.

A second rider also tumbled into the accident-prone area within the same week prompting locals to report it to authorities.

Oui Manussiri who owns a restaurant nearby said: ‘I feel sorry for the motorcycle riders. The first man who fell was safe but his phone fell into the puddle and got broken.'

Oui said the unsuspecting hole would look like it was part of the pathway until motorists reach a few feet away from it as it did not have any signage around.

She added: ‘It was a newly built road but I think the matter was urgent so we reported what had been happening. Someone is hurt almost on a daily basis.'

Local authorities promised to install plastic barriers around the ditch to warn motorists and keep the area safer.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
