Cape Town, 10 August 2023: The Cape Town taxi strike continued for its eighth day as authorities and taxi bosses failed to reach a settlement. The strike started on Thursday 3 August after taxis immediately went on strike in protest against vehicle impoundments by the City of Cape Town’s vehicle authorities.

The taxi strike has resulted in food and bread shortages across the city, especially in poor and vulnerable communities. The bread shortage has arisen as result of workers being unable to travel to work. Mini bus taxis are the biggest transport medium in Cape Town. Many buses were torched during the strike resulting in Golden Arrow buses being provide with police and law enforcement escorts between destinations.

Today SANTACO (South African National Taxi Council) leaders went into negotiations with the city and provincial government. The national department of transport in the late afternoon expressed their disappointment at SANTACO for leaving the negotiations. The City and Western Cape Provincial Government teams led by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Premier Alan Winde announced they had made an offer to SANTACO to consider. SANTACO is still deliberating the negotiations.
