Footage shows a Concorde supersonic jet being moved by a barge on August 9 for restoration work in Brooklyn, New York.

The iconic British Airways plane - one of only two still airworthy - had been on show at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum since 2003 but will spend the next few months at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Staff said the work on the aircraft is expected to take about three months and will begin by sanding and stripping the plane down to bare metal before it is repainted.

The Concorde was capable of flying at speeds of up to Mach 2.02 (1,354 mph or 2,179 km/h), which made it possible to travel from New York to London in just under three hours.

However, a crash in France in 2000 in which all 109 passengers and crew on board, as well as high operating costs and declining demand, led to the planes being taken out of service.

There are 18 Concordes left in the world but only two are airworthy.
