STORYLINE:

More than 100 Tanzanian mathematics teachers have been trained under a Tanzania-Shanghai Mathematics program focusing on methodologies for teaching mathematics in secondary and primary schools.

The two-week training, which ended Friday, was undertaken by a team of Chinese mathematics teachers from Shanghai. The Shanghai team was headed by Huang Xingfeng, a professor with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Teacher Education Center (TEC). The UNESCO-TEC aims at promoting the development of teacher education worldwide, with a particular focus on supporting developing countries in Asia-Pacific and Africa to improve education quality and teacher quality.

According to Huang, during the two weeks, the Shanghai mathematics teachers collaborated with Tanzanian mathematics teachers at a school located in the Dar es Salaam University College for Education (DUCE) compounds to improve the Tanzanian teachers' professional development.

"In the two weeks, we, as a team, with Shanghai mathematics teachers and our colleagues from UNESCO-TEC, collaborated with Tanzanian mathematics teachers in Chang'ombe. So Shanghai teachers taught mathematics in Chang'ombe primary and secondary schools. So our purpose is to improve Tanzanian teachers' professional development. So we Shanghai teachers teach mathematics and Tanzanian teachers observe the lessons, and Tanzanian teachers teach mathematics and Shanghai teachers observe. So then we can talk about how to improve mathematics teaching with each other and discuss lots of things in the primary and secondary schools."

Jacob Dibogo, a mathematics teacher at Chang'ombe Demonstration Secondary School and one of the beneficiaries of the training, said he learned a lot about teaching mathematics during the program.

"The program has many beneficial to me because in this program which I attended, I learned a lot of things, how to teach in a class, how to prepare a lesson and how even to interact with the students, how to give students a chance to participate in acquiring or exploring mathematics content, so it's a program which gives me a lot of benefits so that I can even evaluate myself through students who I am teaching, because through the work I am giving them from this program, I'll be able to know whether my students understand or they enjoy the lesson, or at what point they are stuck during my lesson."
