STORYLINE:
STANDUP 1 (English): WILLIAM, International student, Beijing Language and Culture University
"Hello, Everybody! My name is William. I'm from Beijing Language and Culture University. Actually, I'm having my vacation here, and I want to show you this place because it's so unique. Can you believe that the pond behind me, just 13 years ago, used to be a coal mine? No, I'm not kidding. Now I'll show you everything and tell you how it happened. Let's go.
I finally found evidence that some years ago, this place used to be for digging coal. I think I have to take a picture here. A snapshot.
The mining actually lasted for a thousand years. Guys, that's hard to imagine, right? And this place turned totally green. Fantastic!
How did everything happen? That's the question. I think it's time to find the manager and talk to him and to get some answers."
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): WANG ZHENHUA, General manager, Bairuigu Scenic Area
"In the past, there was coal slag almost everywhere. This was the only tree in this area at that time, which was accidentally planted by a coal miner. Years of coal mining resulted in serious water and soil loss and vegetation damage, causing great harm to the natural environment. In order to achieve better and more sustainable development, from 2006 to 2010, the local government closed all 142 coal mines in the Shijiaying Township. It started to develop tourism by establishing the Bairuigu Scenic Area. After more than 10 years, the defunct mines have been turned into a resort with lucid water, lush mountains, and blue sky."

"Wow, I feel great. It was so amazing through the rail. Mountains are awesome."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): SHI CHANGWEI, Villager
"Here used to be a coal mining area. When the wind blew, the whole village became very dirty. So a lot of villagers left and settled in cities. After the local government closed coal mines and started to develop tourism, villagers gradually came back. We'd like to attract more tourists by offering them a good environment."
STANDUP 3 (English): WILLIAM, International student, Beijing Language and Culture University
"Every year, more and more tourists come to Bairuigu. So it influences the local economy here, the local business."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WILLIAM, International student, Beijing Language and Culture University
"I was impressed by the first look (of this family inn). Look at the window seat. A good restaurant is not only about the food, but also the view."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): ZHANG PINGFANG, Villager
"This is Stewed Fish in Iron Pot, a specialty of my restaurant."
SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): WILLIAM, International student, Beijing Language and Culture University
"Stewed Fish in Iron Pot."
In China, the concept of ecological protection and restoration has taken root.
In the past 10 years, a total of 68 million hectares of afforestation has been completed across the country, and the area of planted forests ranks first in the world.
China has become the country with the fastest and largest growth in forest resources in the world.
STANDUP 4 (English): WILLIAM, International student, Beijing Language and Culture University
"Bairuigu is very interesting, but the story behind it is really unbelievable. It used to be a coal mine, but now it's a great resort. Smart and brave people changed the situation. Now people can live healthier lives, happier lives. Guys, I really don't want to leave this place, that's an amazing place. I want to stay here as much as I can."
