A flight from Australia to Malaysia was forced to turn back when a passenger allegedly threatened crew and passengers.

The Malaysia Airlines jet bound for Kuala Lumpur took off from Sydney Airport at 1:40pm local time on August 14.

About an hour later, the passenger allegedly began making threats to the crew and passengers onboard flight MH122.

He also reportedly unzipped his backpack and made veiled threats about having something dangerous inside.

The flight crew onboard the Airbus A330 alerted the Australian Federal Police (AFP), who met the plane when it landed back in Sydney at 4pm.

The passenger was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill.

The incident caused major delays at Sydney Airport, with 32 domestic flights being cancelled and other flights experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes.

The AFP said that the incident was being treated as a serious matter.
