Thai protesters march amid frustration over sham election
Thai protesters staged a march in Bangkok amid continued frustration over the country's recent sham elections that saw the national poll winner banned from government.
Members of pro-democracy group United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration took to the streets near Pathum Wan intersection on Monday August 14, weeks following Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat's failed bid to become Prime Minister.
The Harvard graduate won the national elections, but was blocked by the Siamese monarchy and military-allied politicians from taking the premiership, deeming his progressive agenda a threat to national security.
Thailand is still without a leader, with no date set on the next parliamentary vote for prime minister.
Disgruntled protesters held the 'Shining Light on Democracy' march as they urged Thai leaders to 'heed the voice of the people'.
The march began at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and ended at the Ratchaprasong intersection. They also stopped at the Wat Pathum Wanaram Buddhist temple to light candles and lay flowers commemorating the casualties of the violent military crackdown on the 'Red Shirts Protest' that left around 98 dead back in 2010.
The demonstrators also denounced the Pheu Thai Party - which won the second-most number of seats in the elections - for leaving its coalition with the Move Forward Party and aligning with military-backed parties to attempt to secure the Prime Ministership.
The move was slammed by critics as a violation of the party's campaign promises.
