Customs officials have destroyed dozens of sex toys seized from a shipping container entering Bali, Indonesia.

The Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Customs Office confiscated the items arriving on the popular holiday island from neighboring China.

There said the demolition was carried out on August 15 in accordance with Indonesian law, which prohibits the import and sale of sex toys. The law states that sex toys are considered obscene materials and are not allowed to be distributed or sold in the country.

Officers said that the sex toys were seized from a shipping container that arrived in Bali from China. The container was also carrying other goods, including clothing and electronics. The goods were worth IDR3.4 billion (around US$220,000).

The customs office said that it has been cracking down on the import of sex toys in recent years. In 2022, the office seized more than 1,000 sex toys.

Muslim majority Indonesia has strict laws on obscenity, which are a reflection of the country's conservative culture.

However, there is also a growing movement to decriminalize sex toys and other forms of sexual expression.
