Woman slammed online after saying she gets the 'ick' if her dates don't pay for the bill
A woman has divided opinions online after saying she gets the “ick” if her date doesn’t pick up the tab.
Ashleigh Nekeman has gone viral after sharing a TikTok about one of her recent dating experiences, tackling the common question: who pays the bill?
The clip has been viewed 86,000 times and received over 2,000 likes, with social media users coming out in droves to share their thoughts.
And some users aren’t very impressed with the 29-year-old – saying she should “pay for your own s**t”, while others have come out in her defence.
“As he made no notion to pay for it, I paid for the total bill” Ashleigh, from Brisbane, Australia, told NeedToKnow.co.uk about her date.
“We met on Hinge.
“It was a very quick encounter – we only knew each other for two weeks and had seen each other four times in that time.
“We were just going to see each other casually over the weekend so we went to get a massage and then lunch.
“On this date we each paid for our own massages and then we had sushi for lunch.
“The total of the bill was $40 and when the waitress asked how we were paying he quickly replied ‘We’ll split it’.
“The waitress was struggling to split the bill and as I could tell she was having a hard time with it so I suggested that we can pay together.
“He made no notion to pay for it.
“I paid for the total, but he had made no comment about paying me back as he wasn’t willing to split it in the first place.
“He walked me to my car and went in for a kiss, which I made up an excuse but it’s because I had the ick.” [sic]
Ashleigh's video has created quite a reaction online with some slamming the “ick” as unfair.
Erin Louise Garland said: “Wow four dates and don’t know if you like him.”
Sam Matthews added: “Equal rights but only when it suits you. Pay for your own s**t. Guys hate paying because all we get is no number back and endless dinners.”
Vic said: “You fought for equality. Paying for sushi was everything you wanted.”
Sam said: “So you’re broke, just say it and move on to another guy who will pay for ur food that you’re eating.” [sic]
However, many others were quick to defend Ashleigh and support her decision.
Nazia Amira said: “You are beautiful and so much kinder than me, you deserve better! A man should pay, and course it’s off-putting, you are the prize and he is lucky.”
Eloise added: “This isn't even about gender issues. At the end of the day you want to be paired with someone who has the same attitude to generosity and accountability.”
Aman Dhaliwal said: “Male perspective yes it’s a valid ick! Chivalry should still be alive.”
Carly Leah added: “I’m being trolled on Facebook for agreeing with this girl, big ick.”
Speaking about the online response, Ashleigh revealed she has been quite surprised by the reaction.
She added: “The reaction online has been interesting as many are saying ‘this is the equality that women fought for’ which I think equality is a much bigger topic than splitting the bill on a date.
“Many women have commented on the video saying that it’s a valid ick and men should be courting women in the beginning of dating and that if they do this at the beginning of dating, it’ll only get worse as the relationship goes on.”
