Dramatic footage has emerged from China of a man causing trouble on a plane from Shanghai to New York, injuring three police officers before finally being arrested.

In the video, captured in Shanghai on Sunday afternoon, a group of police can be seen trying to control the man on board before dragging him off the plane to the airport hall.

According to news reports, the man surnamed Lu is an associate professor of Pennsylvania State University in the US who was shortly invited as a special-term professor by Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China.

The chaos started when Mr Lu became angry after his upgrade request was declined. He then took another passenger's seat.

After the captain called the police, he refused to get off and resisted arrest while reportedly shouting "I'm American", until eventually being captured by the officers.

Three policemen were slightly injured during the conflict and Mr Lu is currently in custody pending further investigation.
