STORYLINE:

Copenhagen has been officially designated as the World Capital of Architecture for 2023 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the recommendation of the General Assembly of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

This honor draws architects, city planners, and tourists globally to discover the city's architectural allure.

Throughout the year, a diverse program showcasing global experts and Copenhagen's architectural gems will run.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): KRISTINE MUNKGAARD PEDERSEN, Head of secretary, World Capital of Architecture Copenhagen
"In 2023, this year, we will host UNESCO's World Capital of Architecture in Copenhagen. And that means that there will be a lot of different events taking place in the city, and we will showcase architectural sights to Copenhageners, but also to visitors from all over the world. We look very much forward to that."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MAL LORIMER, Tourist
"It's my second time in Copenhagen. I'm a visitor here, but I'm an architect myself. And I can appreciate the quality of some of the architecture, all of them behind us, and some new buildings since I came here last (time) about seven years ago. There are lots of really good-quality buildings in different areas of the city and lots of interesting stuff. Yeah, absolutely."

Copenhagen's selection stems from its architectural legacy intertwined with ambitious sustainability and liveability goals. One renowned feature is its extensive cycling infrastructure.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SOPHIE HAESTORP ANDERSEN, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen
"In Copenhagen and in Denmark, cycling is not just something we do when we go from A to B, it's also part of our DNA. We have invested a lot of money in cycling (in) the last 10, 15 and 20 years. And we hope to inspire the rest of the world, and to go more in this direction because it is a carbon-neutral way of living and it's also a healthier way of living."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): GEORGE LAM, Tourist
"It is a nice city. It's a liveable city."

The city champions green transportation like the zero-emission, driverless metro and innovative establishments like CopenHill, an eco-friendly waste management facility with a recreational ski track atop.

SOUNDBITE 5 (English): CAMILLA VAN DEURS, Chief city architect of Copenhagen
"This is a project designed by Anders Lendager, a project which is trying to use bricks from 1980 and up to today where the mortar between the bricks is so strong that you cannot separate them and reuse and recycle them in a traditional way. So what Lendager has done is to cut out the bricks from an old facade and almost made the patchwork a curtain of materials. And a third of our waste is related to the building industry. So talking about circularity has an enormous impact on the entire transformation and building of our city."
